A day ahead of reporting their 4th quarter results, Samsung has provided an explanation for the exploding Galaxy Note 7. After its launch in August 2016, the product was recalled in October 2016 due to some serious problems.
Manufacturing & Design Defects in Note 7
One of the biggest problems the product created was exploding. Despite having a nice sleek look and intriguing features, overheating and explosion affected the product’s popularity significantly. The explanation has been supported by experts from all over the world. They have clearly stated that internal, manufacturing and design defects, along with missing insulation tape in the battery is the reason behind the overheating and eventual explosion. They have further added that the design of the phone is no way responsible for this problem.
Corrupt electrode windings in battery
According to the report by Samsung, the negative electrode windings in the battery were found to be bent or broken in some cases. This defect was in the product manufactured by an organization denoted as ‘manufacturer A’. They were the first supplier of batteries for Galaxy Note 7. This happened because the cell pouch did not have much space to accommodate the battery assembly. The other factors mentioned that contributed to the problem are, deformed upper corner of batteries, thin separators and absent insulation tape.
After the mishap happened due to the batteries supplied by manufacturer A, Samsung turned to another option that has been named as just manufacturer B in the report. But the welding defect persisted resulting in self-heating and short-circuit.
The team of investigators from Samsung also conducted a thorough checking of the various features of Galaxy Note 7 including fast charging, water resistance and iris scanner to find out if they are in some way responsible for the problem. The result shows that, these features have nothing to do with the overheating and exploding of the product.
A thorough investigation conducted by Samsung
Samsung engaged more than 700 researches who checked more than 200,000 Galaxy Notes and 30,000 batteries before providing this long overdue explanation. After dealing with the financial and public-relation debacle due to Galaxy Note 7, Samsung is now trying to overcome the problem and repossess its position once more.
